Torah Times Circular = Jewish Ad FAIL
My wife (Arielle) picked up this circular in one of the kosher restaurants
in midtown today and was excited to show this to me. I love ads, especially bad ones. Props to Arielle for cherry picking the following ads, which are ripe for parody.
The following are from the Torah Times circular, Week of March 10-16, 2010:
- Shticky Sushi – this ad for a new Kosher Sushi place seemed cool at first. Nice logo. Massive Sushi menu. Great. One problem. I have no idea where this place is. There’s a 718 phone number, but that could mean Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island or the Bronx. No idea. So I figured, I’ll go to their website. Pretty cool website, especially for a Kosher place, right? I looked everywhere. No address. Nothing. What’s even weirder… it says “curbside pickup also available”. Is this a joke? Curbside sushi pickup to a place no one can find? Good luck. >> You guys need marketing assistance. Feel free to contact me… Click for Ad Image
- Joe Lazar for City Council – I only vote for heimeshe people that are warm and fuzzy … Click for Ad Image
Ridiculous Jewish / Pesach (Passover) Products:
- I’m actually pissed off I didn’t invent any Kosher for Pesach products. Maybe I should start a Kosher for Passover website: “This site contains no chametz or gebrochts“.
- Kosher Passover Pans – seriously? are regular pans laced with breadcrumbs? … Click for Ad Image
- Palisades Aluminum Foil – same shtuyot (stupidity) as the above product… Click for Ad Image
- Glatt Water – Water … with extra special Glatt nutrients! … Click for Ad Image
- Swarovski Crystal Pesach Collection — 1) This ad screams of 2 copyright or trademark infringements. 2) Crystals on your seder paraphernalia? Why? Why? 3) This is selling for $500!! … Click for Ad Image
Are these products necessary? If you have purchased (or feel the need to purchase) the products below, please comment on this post to explain why, and include your halachic / textual reference. I’m honestly curious to read why we need them.

I’ve noticed Americans are fanatic about their privacy. Maybe that’s why the Sushi place is hiding away. You can try calling them and see if they’re be willing to part with that information. Just be careful, if they think you’re from the Census, they won’t tell you anything but a number.

This is awesome, I gotta start reading this blog my often!!
Re: the Pesach products, @RavTex informed me that some must have Passover items, like Corelle plates for example, contain corn starch and do require a different production for Pesach. So you never know what weird things are in some products. Admittedly, most products (like water!) shouldn’t bother having an OUP.
I have never purchased any of those products, but I have heard of some paper plate companies using corn starch in them, so that could be why they need it.
The Sushi Place did link to their facebook page, which says Boro Park

Some pans and foil could be coated. That’s why you see a O-U on Reynolds Aluminum Foil.
You got me on the water (certified bug free?) and the Crystal.
Shticky Sushi looks like a delivery only service (but you can pickup from the their location as well).
@IsraeliMom: Why open a restaurant and advertise if you dont want people to find it? Privacy is for individuals, not food establishments.
@CharlieShrem: Thanks man!
@Susanne: Even so, products made of paper, plastic, or aluminum do not and should not need a hashgacha.
@Tuvia: You’re right, it says Boro Park on it’s Facebook page. Which begs 2 questions: 1) WHERE in BP? It’s a big place. What’s the address? and 2)How many people in Boro Park are on Facebook? Such shtus! If they’re on Facebook, wouldn’t that mean they have access to the Internet? That’s a shonda and you know it! LOL
@Yohaas: I thought it was delivery only too, but it doesnt say in what boro or area, unless you meander to their Facebook page. How do you have “pickup” service without telling people where you are located?
In terms of Corn starch that’s kitniot not chametz and kitniot is just a geder not halacha so the whole thing is dumb with a capital d.
